Tourmaline is a group or family of minerals that are Aluminium Borosilicates with various other chemical elements involved in their formation, such as Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Lithium or Iron. Colours are often due to these other elements within the crystals, or from trace elements within the stone. Some forms and colours of Tourmaline are exceptionally rare. Hardness is 7 to 7.5 on Mohs scale, although natural crystals of Tourmaline can be extremely brittle.
