Amethyst / Citrine Tumblestones
Find out more about amethyst/citrine tuMblestones
Amethyst, Citrine and Priasiolite are all members of the Quartz family with a hardness of 7 on the MOHs scale. They vary in colour due to trace amounts of Iron in their composition and due to location found in the world. The Iron can turn the stone purple, golden yellow or green, or a combination of those colours, depending on how much heat and pressure the crystal was subjected to during its growth phase. Natural Citrine is rare, as all Citrine starts life as Amethyst, and is often harvested before turning into Citrine naturally. Therefore, much of the Citrine that is sold is created by reheating Amethyst until it changes to gold or yellow.
When bands of White or Clear Quartz form within the mineral, this gives a chevron effect to the stones, and is how Chevron Amethyst, Chevron Amegreen, and Chevron Priasiolite are formed.
