Chalcedonies are micro-crystalline members of the Quartz family, with a hardness of 7 on the MOHs scale. They often form by precipitation from host rocks, the silicon dioxide dissolving minerals from the rocks and forming as stalactites of tiny drusy Quartz crystals. Colours are often due to trace minerals collected from the surrounding host rocks.
